Relacje między słowem a obrazem w malarstwie dawnym

Relation between Word and Image in Old Painting

The text discusses the relation between a word and an image in the old painting with a particular focus on the Middle Ages period. The author makes a comparative analysis of functions and forms of this dialogue in icon painting and altar painting, with Mystic Lamb Altarpiece by Hubert and Jan van Eyck in the Ghent Cathedral as the case study. The word presented in the icon refers to its coexistence with the painting, coessentiality as well as symbolic and aesthetic functioning of the writing system. In the Latin culture it was supposed to be more a commentary, complement or hint and was related to the narrative space built in the work.
