Concrete Poetry: Name and Poetics

In this paper both the poetics of the narrowly understood concrete poetry and the sources of its name are examined. Concrete poets were strongly influenced by the paintings of van Doesburg and Bill, which had an impact on their choice of the name “concrete” and on certain elements of their poetics. In the article the idea of concrete art is presented and juxtaposed with the idea of abstract art and abstract poetry. The next section provides a brief description of the poetics of concretism. It is followed by selected examples of concrete texts. Especially the metalinguistic and the self-referential functions turn out to dominate in these poems.
