Sign-Based Graphical User Interface in Video Games

The article discusses the ways of creating meanings using graphical interfaces in video games. First, the author explains the category of interface and classifies it as a new media phenomenon; then he analyzes the functions of the graphical interfaces in games and also indicates selected strategies of meaning creation which may be noticed in various elements of interfaces. The article portrays the interface as a multi-functional phenomenon using the signs fixed in the culture and seeking condensation and transparency of a sign.
