Natalia Grądzka

Photograph of Five Fallen against the Background of Demonstration of 1861

The text discusses a photograph of five fallen participants of the demonstration which took place on February 27, 1861; its role in insurgent propaganda and multiple uses. The analysis of the photograph is accompanied by reflection on relations between photographs and death, with a special emphasis on the nineteenth century. To outline the context of the photo circulation and its use, a photograph is presented against the background of the preceding events (patriotic demonstrations), as well as patriotic photography, represented in the study by one of the most important Polish photographers of the nineteenth century – Karol Beyer.
